Learning doesn’t stop in the classroom — and in many cases, it never starts there. We work closely with parents and guardians, sharing simple, practical ways to support their children’s learning, health, and development at home, even with limited resources.

The Challenge

Caregivers are the primary influencers of a child’s learning and development, yet millions of children grow up in environments where parental guidance and support are limited. Globally, caregivers often face challenges such as:

  • Limited understanding of early learning: Many parents are unaware of child development milestones, foundational literacy, numeracy, or how to structure learning at home.

  • Insufficient health and nutrition knowledge: Caregivers may not understand how diet, hygiene, or basic health practices influence learning and growth.

  • High workload and stress: In low-resource communities, caregivers juggle multiple responsibilities, leaving little time or energy for structured support.

  • Socioeconomic and cultural barriers: Lack of access to materials, social norms, and financial constraints can limit caregiver engagement in child development.

Implications: Without caregiver support, even high-quality educational or community programs often fail to produce lasting learning outcomes. Children may fall behind academically, develop poor health habits, or miss opportunities for holistic growth.

LSBD’s Philosophy

LSBD believes that empowering caregivers is central to breaking cycles of educational and developmental disadvantage. Children learn best when their home environment is supportive, nurturing, and structured. Caregiver engagement is therefore not an optional add-on—it is integral to all LSBD interventions.

Core Principles:

  1. Integration: Caregiver education runs in parallel with child-focused sessions, connecting learning, health, and nutrition.

  2. Practicality: Sessions are hands-on and focused on real-life, actionable routines.

  3. Inclusivity: Programs are designed for caregivers of all literacy levels and backgrounds.

  4. Sustainability: Tools, guidance, and follow-up encourage long-term behavior change.

LSBD’s Approach to Caregiver Support

1. Awareness and Education

  • Early Learning: Caregivers are trained on literacy, numeracy, and cognitive development milestones, including how to create structured routines for reading, writing, and problem-solving at home.

  • Health & Nutrition: Caregivers learn about hygiene, preventive healthcare, and nutrition’s role in learning and growth.

  • Psychosocial Support: Guidance on positive parenting, emotional support, and encouragement to build confidence and resilience in children.

Example: At Koiwo, caregivers learned simple methods to turn household chores into counting, reading, or problem-solving activities, linking everyday life to learning outcomes.

2. Active Participation

  • Caregivers are not passive observers; they join children in activities, practice exercises, and hands-on demonstrations.

  • LSBD encourages role-playing, storytelling, and demonstration-based learning, so caregivers understand teaching strategies and can replicate them at home.

  • Interactive sessions allow caregivers to ask questions, share experiences, and problem-solve with LSBD volunteers.

Example: In Koiwo, caregivers joined alphabet tracing activities with younger children, learning how to reinforce letter-sound associations and number recognition at home.

3. Provision of Practical Tools

  • Take-home materials: Literacy and numeracy books, worksheets, and guidance sheets for structured home practice.

  • Visual aids: Posters and charts explaining hygiene routines, healthy meals, and daily learning schedules.

  • Demonstration kits: Objects and teaching tools used during outreach to practice with children at home.

Example: Caregivers in Koiwo received a learning kit alongside their child, ensuring consistent reinforcement beyond the outreach session.

4. Follow-Up & Continuous Support

  • LSBD emphasizes short-term follow-ups (calls, visits, or group sessions) to reinforce adoption of routines.

  • Peer networks: Caregivers are encouraged to form support groups, share strategies, and problem-solve collectively.

  • Assessment & feedback: Caregivers report back on their child’s progress, and LSBD provides additional guidance as needed.

Example: Caregiver follow-ups after Koiwo aimed to ensure children were practicing literacy and numeracy at home, while hygiene and nutrition routines were being maintained.

Impact: Lessons from Koiwo

  • Attendance: 14 caregivers actively participated alongside 78 children.

  • Engagement Outcomes:

    • Caregivers demonstrated increased understanding of child development, nutrition, and hygiene.

    • Households implemented simple routines for daily reading, counting, and health practices.

    • Children showed higher engagement and enthusiasm during learning sessions due to caregiver support.

  • Behavioral Change: Many caregivers reported adopting structured learning routines at home, integrating lessons from the outreach into daily life.

Global Relevance

  • Multiplier effect: Empowering one caregiver can impact multiple children in the household and community.

  • Sustainability: Long-term learning and health outcomes are stronger when caregivers are actively involved.

  • Holistic development: Children benefit academically, socially, and emotionally when supported at home.

  • Community resilience: Engaged caregivers become advocates, creating networks that support child development and educational continuity.

LSBD Key Insights

  • Caregiver engagement is as critical as child-focused interventions. Programs without home support rarely achieve lasting outcomes.

  • Integrated sessions combining learning, health, and nutrition maximize understanding and adoption.

  • Follow-ups and community networks are essential for sustaining behavior change.

  • Contextualized, culturally appropriate strategies empower caregivers to act within their real-world constraints.

Takeaway: Investing in caregivers creates a foundation for lifelong learning, health, and well-being, making them essential partners in LSBD’s global mission.
